about

No Memory Came is the debut single from Naarm/Melbourne based singer-songwriter Camilla Rose Sullivan. Written as a letter to a younger self, the song is a reflection on teenage misadventures through coastal towns and explores how the memories of those times are both longed for, yet painfully pushed away. Camilla was inspired to write the song after re-reading the short story No Memory Comes by author Tim Winton which beautifully captures the vast, raw and lonely nature of Australia's coastlines and the intricate internal worlds of those who inhabit them. Evoking the feeling of isolated, post-tourist beaches in the middle of Winter the music features an ambient, soft-rock sound influenced by The War On Drugs and Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska. Recorded at Sing Sing studios, the lush soundscape of the song features the skilful playing of musicians Libby Ferris (lead guitar), Jake Pickering (drums), Joel Koster (bass) and was expertly co-produced, recorded and mixed by sound engineer Hadyn Buxton.
Lyrically Camilla weaves the imagery of luminous sand dunes and haunted weatherboard houses together with the teenage sense of lostness. The simultaneous fear of nothing and everything changing. Set to be released in July, No Memory Came is an ethereal and cathartic anthem, it's a headphone song for walking along Ninety Mile Beach when the moon is full and past selves have been whispering, like ghosts in the sea-spray.

lyrics

see her in the summer
wide-eyed lonely girl
running through the dunes

like a wave she could pull me under
so fucking angry with everyone
scared of what they think of her

running with the pack
on a Friday night
you fall right back
and you cry when they leave you behind

running with the pack
now you’re running out of time
and I turn my back
I thought I left you behind

and all my fear in the dark
gets me travelling back to where you are
stuck in the place where nothing changed
and no memory came

all my fear in the dark
it’s enough right now to light me up
feel the panic setting in again
but no memory came

breaking into abandoned houses
haunted old weatherboard, years before
a family lived there too

next summer they’ll all be knocked down
signs on the beachfront
hotel coming into view

she’s been walking round like a ghost on the coastline
only the sea spray could give away her outline
Drunk under street lights scream at the night sky
Thinking you’re the only one who’s had it with your life

You’re just scared
You’re just scared

and all my fear in the dark
gets me travelling back to where you are
stuck in the place where nothing changed
and no memory came

all my fear in the dark
it’s enough right now to light me up
feel the panic setting in again
but no memory came

oh no memory came
oh no memory came
oh no memory came
oh no memory came
